5 Benefits of Drinking Water First Thing in the Morning
January 26, 2023
Everyone knows that water is essential for health. We also know that most people aren’t drinking enough during the day, so how do we correct this? Dr. Easton recommends starting your day off with water, and you can see what he says about this morning hack here. If you continue here, we talk about 5 benefits of drinking water first thing in the morning:
1. Rehydrate Your Body
The most important benefit of starting your morning off with water is that it will rehydrate your body. Everyone wakes up slightly dehydrated in the morning because your body has been asleep and not taking in any fluid. You also lose water over time, whether it’s from sleeping with your mouth open or in a warm room, so that’s why it’s important to drink as soon as you wake up to give your body the fluids it needs.
2. Increase Energy Levels
Many people find that drinking water first thing in the morning helps wake them up, especially if the water is cold. This is especially true since you will be slightly dehydrated, which can make you tired, dizzy, and possibly have a headache. If you drink water as soon as you wake up, it starts the rehydration process and prevents these symptoms.
3. Boost Your Metabolism
Another benefit of starting your morning by drinking water is boosting your metabolism! If you’re trying to lose weight, this is a great hack to help you reach your goals. Cold water specifically helps your body jumpstart your metabolism because your body has to warm up the chilly liquid. Many people find that drinking cold water on an empty stomach can increase their metabolism by 30%.
4. Promote Healthy Digestion
If you’re someone who struggles with constipation, then drinking water first thing in the morning will be a game changer. Your digestive system uses water to help keep things regular, and if you’re dehydrated, it can’t work properly. So if you struggle with bathroom issues, start your morning with a big glass of water to get things moving!
5. Strengthen Your Immune System
A huge benefit of drinking water first thing in the morning is that it helps strengthen your immune system. While we can’t guarantee you’ll never get sick if you start your day with water, it will help your body fight against sickness and keep your immune system at top-notch working order!
How Much Water Should I Drink Every Day?
Dr. Easton says that his daily goal of water is 64 ounces. If you’re trying to determine how much water you should consume during the day, there are several tricks you can use to help you decide.
Some people like knowing an exact number, and if you’re one of those people, you can use this formula. Take your weight and multiply it by 0.5, and you’ll get the number of ounces of water you should drink every day. Here’s an example for someone who weighs 200 pounds:
200 lbs. x 0.5 = 100 ounces of water
If you don’t do well with exact numbers, the other way you can determine how much you should drink is the color of your urine. If you’re dehydrated or not drinking enough, your urine will be a dark yellow or medium yellow color. If you’re optimally hydrated, urine will be a pale yellow, almost straw-like color. You do not want to have your urine be completely clear.
The exceptions to these rules of thumb are anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. These people should be increasing their fluid intake by 24 to 32 ounces depending on their weight.
